Wheel of the Year: Spring Equinox Musings 2017

Are you ready for Spring? You can bet I am! Here in New York, we had one of the least harsh winters ever, and then (go figure) we got hit with a massive snow storm in mid-March! At first, I was disappointed that the world outside my front door was covered in a mountain of snow rather than pastel colored eggs and bunnies hopping around with baskets full of chocolate… Only, not, because the fact of the matter is, its NEVER really like that!

In case you’re a newb to the Wheel of the Year, the Spring Equinox is the astronomical event which happens every year around March 21. It’s the day when there are 12 hours of sun light and 12 hours of night time, and the following day, the days begin growing longer than the nights, making way for the bright half of the year!

In this previous article, we discuss the spiritual meaning of the Spring Equinox. Many pagans tend to celebrate it in a similar way to the Easter of pop culture, decorating with images of spring in full swing! But is that what March 21 looks like in your natural world? For many of us, that’s not usually the case!

Rather than feeling inauthentic about the Spring Equinox, I decided to use this surprise storm as an opportunity to cozy up and enjoy the comforts of winter one last time before things really warm up. I lit some candles, cranked the heat, and allowed my mind to wander down a strange road for this Wheel of the Year Musings journal entry. Enjoy!
